From this year, 2025, updated guidance under BS5839-1: 2025 introduces clearer guidance on system categories (L1–L5, M, and P systems) and how to choose the right type for each building based on its risk level and occupancy type.
This update is particularly significant for care providers to ensure that, in the event of a fire, alerts are sent directly to a monitored centre, allowing for faster emergency response and reducing the burden on care staff to take immediate action alone.
What does this mean in practice?
BS 5839-1 covers systems that include automatic fire detectors, manual call points, and interlinked control and indicating panels. It also addresses systems that can provide signals to initiate the operation of other fire protection systems or safety measures – such as automatic door release mechanisms, shut-off valves, and lift grounding.
If you are unsure about your current fire alarm system and how it operates, your premises may no longer meet current fire safety requirements. That could impact insurance, regulatory inspections, and most importantly, the safety of your residents.
The change aligns with a growing emphasis on safeguarding vulnerable individuals. According to Care Quality Commission data, 81% of care home residents in the UK are aged 75 or over, many with mobility or cognitive challenges. In these environments, every second counts during an emergency.
At C&M Fire Alarms, we work with care homes across the South of the UK to review, upgrade, and maintain compliant fire alarm systems. We can advise on design, and installation or work on your existing system, providing full installation or integration where needed.
Don’t forget maintenance
Even a compliant system must be regularly maintained to remain effective. BS 5839-1 also outlines the requirement for routine servicing and testing of all fire detection systems, typically on a quarterly basis. This helps identify faults early, ensures correct operation, and demonstrates due diligence in protecting residents and staff.
Here at C&M Fire Alarms, we offer a PPM contract that covers your system 24/7.
