C&M Fire Alarms Supporting the Refurbishment of The Capitol Theatre

Work is progressing on the major refurbishment of The Capitol in Horsham, with the much-loved theatre and cinema venue undergoing its first significant upgrade in more than 20 years.

The refurbishment project, being delivered by Willmott Dixon Interiors on behalf of Horsham District Council [LINK], will modernise the venue throughout. Planned improvements include upgrades to the auditorium, cinema screens, bars, toilets and box office, alongside improved accessibility, new seating layouts and extensive mechanical and electrical works.

The Capitol has long been an important part of Horsham’s cultural and community life, hosting theatre productions, live entertainment, cinema screenings and the town’s annual pantomime. The refurbishment aims to secure the venue’s future for years to come, while creating a more modern, accessible and welcoming experience for visitors.

Fire Detection and Alarm Installation for Public Venues

C&M Fire Alarms is proud to be contributing to the project by delivering the fire detection and alarm system installation as part of the wider refurbishment works.

“It’s fantastic to see such an important local venue being updated for the community to enjoy for years to come. As a Horsham-based business, we always appreciate seeing investment in safe, modern public spaces.”
— Victoria Byrne, Managing Director at C&M Fire Alarms

Public entertainment venues present unique fire safety challenges. Large visitor numbers, multiple occupancy areas, complex layouts and back-of-house technical spaces all require carefully designed fire detection systems that support both life safety and operational reliability. During refurbishment projects, it is also essential that new systems integrate effectively with the updated building design and current safety standards.

Fire Safety Services for Entertainment and Cultural Buildings

Projects such as The Capitol also highlight the increasing importance of future-ready safety planning within public venues. Alongside fire safety considerations, many venues are now reviewing wider security and emergency preparedness measures ahead of the future implementation of Martyn’s Law.

Although the legislation will not become enforceable until at least 2027, it is already encouraging venues and organisations to assess their procedures, responsibilities and public safety arrangements. For theatres, cinemas and entertainment spaces, refurbishment projects provide an important opportunity to review safety infrastructure as part of wider building improvements.
