This month marks the 50th year of business for Robin Carter and Ken Marsh, founders and namesakes of C&M Fire Alarms. Robin and Ken’s families are very much part of the fabric of C&M, working in all departments across the business.
Then and Now
To begin with, Robin was employed at Dunford Fire Alarms, and in the 1960s smoke alarms were being installed everywhere. Robin then met Ken working as an engineer and in 1971 they set out in business together to start C&M Fire Alarms. C&M Fire Alarms work to install fire alarms for industrial, commercial and residential properties, and at that time, were Croydon-based. Now, 50 years later, C&M is celebrating nearly 46 years of being Horsham based. Currently housed in the City Business Centre off Brighton Road, C&M cover over 800 sites across the UK. C&M Fire Alarms now have nine engineers and nearly the same amount of branded vans, along with a team of seven office staff.
The Rail Network
C&M Fire Alarms places some of its success on working with the railway network. Its biggest contract came with installing systems at London Victoria Station. The installation of smoke and heat detectors, address systems, alarm speakers, call points and a microphone for emergency use by the fire brigade covered the entire concourse area. In addition, the systems also had to cover all 19 platforms, retail units, storage units, basement areas and admin offices with voice alarm messages. This contract then allowed C&M to win further mainline stations including King’s Cross and Paddington.
Another 50 years?
