How PTS Training Supports Safe Working Across the Rail Network

At C&M Fire Alarms, high standards are something we are very proud of and at the very core of the services we provide as fire alarm specialists. This is particularly important when working in complex, high-risk environments such as railway stations and operational depots across London and the Southeast.

From busy city-centre stations in London to rail depots in locations such as Ashford or Ramsgate, our engineers are trusted to service and maintain fire alarm systems where safety is critical. That trust is built on investment in people, training and qualifications, including Personal Track Safety (PTS).

How PTS Training Supports Safe Working Across the Rail Network

What is Personal Track Safety (PTS)?

Personal Track Safety (PTS) is essential training for anyone working on or near railway infrastructure. It provides the knowledge and competence required to operate safely in live railway environments and is a mandatory requirement for accessing Network Rail sites.

All railway companies we work with require our engineers to hold valid PTS certification and a Sentinel card. This ensures that every member of our team understands the risks associated with railway operations and knows how to work safely alongside other rail professionals.

What PTS Training Covers

PTS training is designed to prepare individuals for the realities of working on or near the track. Key elements include:

  • Safety procedures – identifying hazards, understanding safe systems of work and reducing risk in high-risk environments
  • Emergency protocols – knowing how to respond quickly and correctly, including communication and evacuation procedures
  • Railway terminology – ensuring clear, consistent communication on site
  • Signalling systems – understanding how signalling supports safe railway operations
  • Electrification safety – learning the dangers associated with electrified lines and how to work safely around them

Most courses combine classroom-based learning with practical, on-site elements, allowing engineers to apply their knowledge in a controlled environment.

Sentinel Cards and Ongoing Compliance

On successful completion of PTS training, engineers are issued with a Sentinel card. This certification is valid for two years and must be renewed through recertification training to ensure knowledge remains current and standards are maintained.

At C&M Fire Alarms, we actively support ongoing training and recertification, ensuring our engineers remain fully compliant with railway requirements and industry best practice.

Investing in Safety, Delivering Confidence

Our commitment to high-level training such as PTS means our clients can have confidence that every fire alarm system we service or maintain on railway premises is handled by qualified, competent professionals who understand the environment they are working in.

It’s one more way C&M Fire Alarms invests in its people to deliver safe, reliable and compliant fire protection services where they matter most.
